Aldi to Install 96,000 Solar Panels by 2018

We are proud to be supporting Aldi’s ambition to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2020.   Aldi’s latest announcement to have a total of 96,000 solar panels installed across their UK sites by 2018, marks a significant step to achieving this goal and will enable the retail giant to produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 6,200 households.

The next phases of works will add to the 85,000 units already installed across 275 stores and all nine of Aldi’s UK regional distribution centres, which generate more than 17,500MWh of electricity per year.  Since 2014, ETS have project managed the retrofit of these Solar PV installations supporting Aldi by ensuring the project remains within budget and on time without impacting trade.  Our consultants have worked hard to project manage multiple phases of this impressive programme of works, acting as the technical experts on behalf of Aldi.

An important aspect to the successful delivery of this project is the continual monitoring and analysis of energy data prior to works commencing and throughout the project life-cycle.  This is conducted through our Technical Energy Centre (TEC) which uses highly sophisticated software systems, to calculate the cause and effect of all recommended energy saving initiatives, new technologies, operational and behaviour measures. Energy data is then interpreted / analysed by our fully qualified Chartered Energy Managers, Chartered Engineers, Low Carbon Consultants, Certified Measurement and Verification Professionals, ESOS Lead Assessors and ISO 50001 Lead Auditors to make informed decisions on behalf of the client.

Our TEC is a core component in the delivery of our service to Aldi and is integral to the management of energy across the estate.  It is this unique approach to energy management which ensures energy saving initiatives deliver the savings proposed and continues to support Aldi in being recognised as a sustainable retailer.
