Since 2011, organisations have been able to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption, thanks to ISO 50001. Five years after its publication, ISO has reviewed the standard and decided to release an update in the next year to conform to the Annex SL and its High-Level Structure. A meeting was held in Stockholm in June 2016, where ISO formed a new Technical Committee, TC 301, to develop the new Energy Management System Standard (ISO 50001). TC 301 is currently working on the Committee draft with the final version scheduled for release in January 2019.

Whether one needs to be compliant with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive Article 8, reduce operational cost, secure energy-related government subsidies or position themselves as leaders in sustainability, an ISO 50001 compliant energy management system (EnMS) is essential. Step 1 – GAP Analysis

Engaging with relevant stakeholders across your organisation is essential to facilitating a full assessment of how your sites are currently functioning and pinpoint strengths, weaknesses and focus points. After completing a GAP analysis, our consultants will produce an assessment report which provides a complete graphic performance profile of the Energy Management System (EnMS), to enable target-setting for the future as well as the comparison of different units of the organisation (e.g. for benchmarking purposes).

Step 2 – Implementation Plan

The results of the gap analysis, together with a first high-level screening of existing relevant procedures, are summarised in a clear implementation plan detailing a step-by-step roadmap for the implementation of the EnMS with a detailed list of actions and the corresponding planning, roles, and responsibilities.

Step 3 – Implementation Support

Our consultants will provide extensive implementation support and coaching to accelerate your organisation’s journey towards ISO 50001 certification. This support includes:

Screening, reviewing and updating current procedures and working methods
Creating new instructions (if necessary)
Implementing all technical aspects required by ISO 50001 (energy baseline, energy plan, energy performance indicators)
Organising implementation workshops to inform process owners and relevant personnel on all processes and requirements
Developing a communication plan and awareness campaign, which is key to create an effective EnMS and to establish an energy culture within the organisation
Designing a customised training programme upon or near completion of the EnMS implementation; a pre-audit is conducted to verify the completeness of the process and to identify any remaining gaps.
