British American Tobacco - reducing annual energy consumption by £1.02m

British American Tobacco (BAT) has large industrial sites worldwide and needs an experienced energy auditing team to undertake energy audits across their sites. The audits aimed to discover energy usage patterns and correlations, optimise energy systems’ operational philosophy, identify energy and carbon saving opportunities, and support them with carbon-neutral targets.

90% Absolute Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions reduction by 2040
3% energy cost savings delivered
150+ sites under remote control system

Challenge

Energy & Technical Services agreed to undertake the works just before the global pandemic struck, which then eliminated the possibility of visiting the BAT sites to undertake the audit works. It was then agreed that Energy & Technical Services would undertake the works using remote technology and transferring critical data to support the process.

Results

Energy & Technical Services used multi-variable regression analysis to provide BAT with a formula to benchmark their energy usage and flag excess energy consumption in real-time. We calculated the annual energy cost for all significant energy-consuming equipment. We provided options for a staged retrofit program for their ageing equipment, which improved resilience and reduced energy consumption. Finally, we provided the client with options for reducing annual energy consumption by £1.02m, delivering additional stakeholder value of £6.1m over ten years, and identified concepts for deep Scope 1 (fossil fuel) carbon savings.

Midcounties Co-Operative – Solar Panel Installation Assessment

This project aimed to understand how solar PV installation will benefit the client long term. We have identified the yield and efficiency of solar PV and what the cost of repurposing a number of solar PV panels that were in storage specifically for Co-op. This developed into a compatibility study for solar panel installation across 44 sites.

Date Palm Developments – Complete Building Solutions

Date Palm Developments (DPD) approached ETS to design, install, and commission a new Building Management System (BMS) for their proposed "Ottons Lab." Given the complex nature of the facility, which specialises in plant cloning, highly detailed designs relating to HVAC controls and operational security were necessary to maintain optimal conditions for both plant growth and occupant comfort in the office areas.

BNP Paribas – Simulated Power Failure

The power test was successful with back-up power supplies, fire alarms, emergency lighting, pedestrian access systems all operating as expected during power failure. All equipment operated correctly and efficiently when power was reinstated.
