Sainsbury's – National Project Management & Main Contractor

Energy & Technical Services were initially employed by Sainsbury’s in 2006 to implement one of the first phases of the Sainsbury’s 20 by 20 Sustainability Plan. We now hold Main Contractor status. We also act as the Clerk of Works and since 2011, we have seconded one of our Senior Consultant’s to work full time within the Sainsbury’s Energy and Engineering Department.

We have implemented a number of energy saving initiatives including refrigeration optimisation, HVAC repairs / refurbishments, BMS upgrades, voltage optimisation and LED lighting upgrades.

Our engineering skills are central to Sainsbury’s 20 by 20 Sustainability strategy and our core role is to evaluate new technologies and identify potential energy saving initiatives at store. We have acted as project manager for a number of roll-outs and we have also undertaken a number of successful energy trials which include ‘Low Footfall Lighting Control’, ‘Defrost On-demand’ and ‘EC Fan Installation’.

Challenge

Early stakeholder engagement is essential to ensuring works are completed on time without impacting on trade. We work collaboratively with client representatives, Contractors, Suppliers and Store Managers to ensure project critical deadlines are met. Our Project Managers are equipped with tried and tested systems and tools which ensures we provide Sainsbury’s with intelligent programme management, informed decision-making and reduced risk.

Added Value / Achievements

Our collaborative approach with Sainsbury’s is an important aspect to the successful delivery of energy saving initiatives. Energy saving targets are agreed with the client prior to works commencing and form the baseline of our performance-based contract. Recent project examples include the Sainsbury’s LED programme (Graphite 6) which produced a cumulative energy saving of over 5 million kWh.

This developed into a compatibility study for solar panel installation across 44 sites.

Date Palm Developments – Complete Building Solutions

Date Palm Developments (DPD) approached ETS to design, install, and commission a new Building Management System (BMS) for their proposed "Ottons Lab." Given the complex nature of the facility, which specialises in plant cloning, highly detailed designs relating to HVAC controls and operational security were necessary to maintain optimal conditions for both plant growth and occupant comfort in the office areas.

BNP Paribas – Simulated Power Failure

The power test was successful with back-up power supplies, fire alarms, emergency lighting, pedestrian access systems all operating as expected during power failure. All equipment operated correctly and efficiently when power was reinstated.
